Today's ornament of the day is a "two-fer". Two that mean so very much. In the year 2001, as we have already discussed, the girls were in the hospital for our Christmas. Steve came up with the idea that we needed to do something special and homemade to acknowledge them on our tree. They wouldn't be home with us and we didn't really have anything in our house at that time that represented them. No toys, no belongings. We weren't sure they would survive and we didn't have the time to make any preparations for them since I was sick right before they were born. So what came out of his idea were these two ornaments.
Simple, construction paper hearts with a picture from the NICU of each of the girls. Not laminated. Not glittery. But packed with so much love and tenderness. Each year these two ornaments, plus a similar one for Stephen, get placed in front near the top of our tree. And as we decorate our tree we remind ourselves and show the kids how much their first few months of life were so incredible. Steve is always the one to place these on the tree. And, yes, both of us cry some tears as we place these on. They'll always be on our tree. I may have to eventually laminate them. But they will always get a place on our tree.
